  23. 1.  IETF/TSIG TNFS Working Group Meeting Summary

  25. 1.1.  General Summary
  26.  
  27. The TNFS working group met in January as a  joint  IETF/TSIG
  28. working group.  By the end of this meeting, we achieved clo-
  29. sure on the  TNFS  document;  all  outstanding  issues  were
  30. resolved.   The  updated  document  will  be archived, and a
  31. request will be made to advance the document  from  Internet
  32. Draft to Proposed Standard.

  34. 1.2.  Meeting Summary
  35.  
  36. During the January meeting, we:
  37.  
  38.      o    inspected (page by page review) the  modifications
  39.           to the TNFS document,
  40.  
  41.      o    reviewed the TKM specification
  42.  
  43.      o    discussed the DNSIX token mapping mechanism
  44.  
  45.      o    discussed plans for associated TNFS documentation
  46.  
  47.      o    reviewed  interoperability  opportunities,  future
  48.           plans
  49.  
  50.      o    discussed TSIG document numbering;  assigned  TSIG
  51.           document numbers

  53. 1.2.1.  TNFS Document Review
  54.  
  55. The IETF TNFS document has been available  for  comments  in
  56.

  68. the  IETF Draft directory and TNFS archive since July, 1991.
  69. During the January meeting, the working group completed work
  70. on  the resolution of all of the outstanding draft comments,
  71. and voted to advance the draft to that of Proposed Standard.
  72. Conforming  implementations are being encouraged in order to
  73. support future interoperability testing.
  74.  
  75. Final updates to the TNFS document include:
  76.  
  77.      o    the distinguished value will be changed from  ZERO
  78.           to "all bits on"
  79.  
  80.      o    the document will be updated to clarify the use of
  81.           process and file privileges
  82.  
  83.      o    a single privilege token will be included  in  the
  84.           credential  and  file  attribute  structures; this
  85.           token may be used to represent either a single  or
  86.           multiple privilege sets
  87.  
  88.      o    client side auditing will be enabled by default; a
  89.           note regarding auditing of non-MLS clients will be
  90.           included
  91.  
  92.      o    file name  labeling  and  multi-level  directories
  93.           will  be included in the TNFS specification, along
  94.           with new protocol operations to support them
  95.  
  96.      o    the client caching  section  will  be  updated  to
  97.           reflect  additional  considerations  in the use of
  98.           cached information after a modification to a  pro-
  99.           cess' security attributes
  100.  
  101. The updated document will be included in the IETF  and  TNFS
  102. archives.

  104. 1.2.2.  Token Manager Review
  105.  
  106. Closure was also reached for TKM document,  in  its  support
  107. for TNFS, with the following updates:
  108.  
  109.      o    include new protocol operation for inverse mapping
  110.           (attribute to token)
  111.  
  112.      o    update the document to use the  AUTH_UNIX  creden-
  113.           tial; this is required to eliminate initialization
  114.           deadlock
  115.  
  116. The updated TKM document will be placed into the IETF  draft
  117. directory and the TSIG TNFS archive.

  119. 1.2.3.  DNSIX Token Mapping
  120.  
  121. Charlie Watt  presented  an  overview  of  the  DNSIX  token

  134. mapping  mechanism.   The  working group provided a few edi-
  135. torial comments back to him.  The major issue identified was
  136. whether  this  Token Mapping model would be made public, and
  137. thus available to the IETF community.  Charlie believed that
  138. this  would  happen in the future, and a representative from
  139. the government also confirmed that this was planned.  At the
  140. present  time,  however, the document is not publicly avail-
  141. able.  So any  possibilities  for  potential  IETF  use  are
  142. delayed until the document can be distributed.

  144. 1.2.4.  Associated TNFS Documentation
  145.  
  146. The working group recommended that the  TNFS  Implementation
  147. and  TNFS  Administration  guides  be  updated  based  on the
  148. October '91 reviews of these documents, and then  placed  in
  149. the  TNFS  archive  and the IETF Draft directory as informa-
  150. tional RFCs.
  151.  
  152. 1.2.5.  Interoperability Testing
  153.  
  154. The working group reviewed the progress of  implementations,
  155. and discussed the possibility of interoperability testing at
  156. the April IETF/TSIG  meeting.   A  proposed  test  plan  was
  157. reviewed, which would be used for this purpose.

  159. 1.2.6.  TSIG Document Numbering
  160.  
  161. During the plenary session, a document numbering scheme  was
  162. selected.  Using this scheme, the working group assigned the
  163. following document numbers:

  181. The TNFS group will plan to meet as both a TSIG and an  IETF
  182. working  group  at the April meeting in Mountain View, Cali-
  183. fornia. At that meeting, we will plan to:

  185.      o    review the "final" version of the  TNFS  documents
  186.           (updated  documents  placed  into the TNFS archive
  187.           and IETF drafts directory: Fred, Fran, Carl, Ali)
